Freely Get. Freely Give.

Over the last few years technology has reduced the cost of replicating and distributing ideas to almost nothing. The result has been a rate of innovation unlike any before. One result is that creative ideas from schools can now be shared for free with other schools anywhere in the world almost immediately. As a result, many of the traditional pipelines once needed for sharing ideas are no longer the most efficient or effective. But the school world hasn’t responded to this new reality. The architecture of information is broken.

Shouldn’t there be a way for creative, highly regarded, top rated, innovative schools to freely share ideas and tools with others? After all, what will change the world faster, if we keep selling our ideas to each other, or give them away? Not “B-game, good enough for school” kind of stuff, but the best stuff from the edge of exemplary work. And then see how others spin and mold it for their work. There’s still a place for some things that need to be sold when there’s no other option. It just shouldn’t be the first option. We need an open source attitude with education ideas.

It may not work. We’ve certainly heard every argument why this isn’t doable. But how about we give it a try? If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of our students. Just log in  and freely get, freely give. I am confident that you have documents or ideas or resources that others would love to use just as I am confident that there will be resources you love to get. If we get to the end of our lives and the Internet is mostly known as a place to get inappropriate items for free and school resources for $5, something’s gone terribly wrong.
